International Energy Company
Powering up efficient energy management across Europe.
Energy suppliers operating across multiple European markets often run in parallel rather than in unison, with each national company maintaining its own back-office system, data set and processes. Closing that gap is one of the sector's most strategically valuable, and technically demanding, transformations.
A multi-year technology partnership
Unifying operations across national companies on one shared digital foundation.
The client is an international energy supplier operating as part of a larger European energy group, serving business and household customers with electricity and natural gas, including a meaningful share from renewable sources. The collaboration began in 2018 and has grown into a multi-year partnership built around a single ambition. Although the group's national companies operated in different markets, their underlying processes were largely the same. What differed was language, local tax rules and the back-office system in each country, leaving the group with parallel application landscapes, multiple data sets and no consolidated view.
Shared processes powered by shared software.
Qubiz designed and built the EMS Portal, an Energy Management System architected as a multi-company platform with an event-driven, service-oriented architecture — where local differences are absorbed through configuration rather than code forks.
- 01
A layer above, not a replacement
The platform sits above the existing back-office systems. Each country kept the tooling it relied on, while the group gained shared invoicing, commissions and reporting through a single layer above.
- 02
Reusable calculation logic
A service-oriented design allows core calculation logic to be reused across modules, keeping the codebase coherent as the platform scales to new markets.
- 03
Configuration over code forks
Shared processes are powered by shared software, with language, local tax rules and back-office differences absorbed through configuration rather than parallel codebases.
- 04
A single source of truth
A group-wide data layer consolidates each country's back-office data into one standardised view, with validation and reconciliation built in, providing consistent reporting for the first time.
THE SOLUTION
A multi-company platform architecture
The platform was deliberately built to sit above the existing back-office systems rather than replace them. Each country kept the tooling it relied on, while the group gained shared invoicing, commissions and reporting through a single layer above. A service-oriented design allows core calculation logic to be reused across modules, keeping the codebase coherent as the platform scales to new markets.
Automated broker commissions
The Broker Commissions module replaced spreadsheet-based calculations with a process that continuously monitors contracts, recalculates commissions once actual consumption is known, and produces fully evidenced statements. Critically, it also supports the recovery of overpayments when actual consumption falls short of contract assumptions, closing a long-standing gap in the previous way of working.
Invoicing for bespoke contracts
The Invoicing module was tailored to the lead market, where an unusually wide range of bespoke contract types had previously forced manual workarounds. A structured input layer captures the variability of those contracts, and automated calculation handles the rest, so even highly customised agreements can be invoiced consistently and auditably.
A unified data warehouse
A group-wide data layer consolidates each country's back-office data into one standardised view, with validation and reconciliation built in. The result is a single source of truth for the group and a substantial rationalisation of the reporting estate, providing consistent reporting across the business for the first time.
What it enables
One foundation across the group.
Multi-company
A single platform unifying invoicing, commissions and reporting across national energy companies.
Auto
Broker commissions continuously recalculated from actual consumption, with overpayment recovery built in.
Bespoke
Even highly customised contracts invoiced consistently and auditably through a structured input layer.
Single
A group-wide data warehouse delivering one standardised, validated source of truth.
Shared processes powered by shared software, with local differences absorbed through configuration rather than code forks. That is what gave the group a consolidated view for the first time.
